This department provides services in three core aspects: 

Assessment/Referral:
 

Assessment interviews enable us to determine how much the use of alcohol or other drugs has affected various areas of clients' lives and to assess detoxification needs. Problem gambling concerns are also addressed. 

After all information has been obtained, a plan is developed and assistance is offered to help clients access the most appropriate type of treatment, admission to one of our own programs or referral to external services. 

Substance Abuse Program:
 

This program offers assistance to individuals in Lambton County who are experiencing problems related to their use of alcohol and other drugs. Services include out-patient counselling, Day Treatment Program, Individual After Care, prevention and education. 

Problem Gambling Program:
 

Assessment and treatment of problem gamblers and/or anyone concerned about someone with a gambling problem. Services include assessment, follow-up, individual and group treatment, prevention, awareness and education.

Diabetes Education Program 

Available to children and youth and their families. Diabetes educators (nurse, dietitian and social worker) counsel on an individual basis. Their goal is to educate the child and family in the ongoing management of diabetes and support them through the changes they encounter. Pediatric Clinics, with a pediatrician or pediatric endocrinologist are available several times per year. 

Group Programs for all age groups (Grade 2 and under, Grade 3 to Grade 8 and teens) are presented throughout the year. A teachers' workshop is presented every Fall. Insulin pump initiation, with physician's order, is available. These programs can be accessed by contacting Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition Services at Bluewater Health. 

In partnership with the Sarnia Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association, groups for youth are coordinated. All youth with diabetes are welcome to participate by contacting Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition Services at Bluewater Health or the Sarnia Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Bluewater Health Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition staff liaise with educators at Children's Hospital London Health Sciences Centre.

Clinical Nutrition Program
 

Registered Dietitians provide education and counselling for any medical condition requiring nutrition therapy. These include eating disorders, overweight, colitis, illeitus, food allergies, celiac disease and feeding problems.

This program serves as the main Sarnia-Lambton community contact for children and adolescents who have eating disorder symptoms. Services include intake assessment, individual and family counselling, community education and referrals as required to London Health Sciences Child and Adolescent Mental Health Eating Disorders Program. 

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Ages: 6-18 years
   
Eligibility: The need for psychiatric assessment is a priority for admission
   
Referrals: Admission is arranged by a physician with Bluewater Health privileges or by contacting a psychiatrist at Bluewater Health.

The Bluewater Health Emergency Department is available 24 hours a day; most psychiatrists share on-call duties and there is a Crisis Intervention Program available within the Emergency Department twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. 

In-Patient Services
 

There are three beds utilized for children and adolescents (24 beds for adults) on the Unit where assessment and treatment is commenced, involving caregivers of the patient. A specially designed level system of activities and privileges is followed, allowing the patient to advance at his/her own pace. 

Social Work assessments, case conferences involving all caregivers, psychiatric services, recreational therapy and comprehensive nursing services as well as medical assessments are all part of the services provided on the Unit.

Dr. Laforte-Moore provides assessment services in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as Adult Psychiatry on an out-patient basis, does psychiatric assessments, on an in-patient basis, and does Testing of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A.).

T.O.V.A. is a computerized continuous performance test used for the assistance of diagnosis and treatment (Medication sensitivity testing) of Attention Deficit Disorder in children and adults.

PACT provides treatment, rehabilitation and support to assist clients with severe and persistent serious mental illness live independently in the community. Services include psychiatric treatment, medication services, individual support therapy, crisis intervention, substance abuse services, education and vocational services, assistance with activities of daily living, and family support.

Eligibility: Individuals who present with acute medical and psychological trauma of a sexual or domestic assault.

The Sexual Assault/Domestic Assault Treatment Centre operates in an effort to assist individuals with the acute medical and psychological trauma of a sexual or domestic assault. The Program offers care to adults, children, women and men. The services consist of medical and nursing care, information, support, referrals to community agencies and detailed documentation of injuries sustained during the assault. 

Short-term counselling and crisis support are available to child victims of sexual assault/abuse, their siblings and non-offending parent through the "Bridge the Gap" program. These services are available to residents of Lambton County who are under the age of 18 years. Professional referrals can access this program by contacting the Family Counselling Centre at 519-336-0120.

Referrals: Can be made by nursing unit, health care team, and physicians or by request of patient and/or family

Social Work provides psycho-social assessment, illness adaptation/adjustment; crisis; bereavement; palliative and resource counselling. In conjunction with a multi-disciplinary team, social workers contribute to the discharge planning process for patients and their families/caregivers.
