Eligibility: You may be eligible for compensation if:
- You have been injured as a result of a violent crime (such as assault, murder, sexual assault or child abuse) committed in Ontario. Your injuries may be physical or psychological.
- You are responsible for the maintenance of a victim of a crime who has suffered monetary loss or incurred expenses as a result of the injury.
- You are the dependant of a deceased victim.

You are not a dependant of the victim but you have incurred expenses as a result of the death of the victim.

You were injured while trying to prevent a crime or while assisting a police officer in making an arrest.

The claim must be filed within two years of the date of the incident. A request for an extension of this time limit may be granted.

The claim for a minor victim, one under 18 years of age, must be signed by a parent, guardian, legal representative or other responsible adult.
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Board administers the Compensation for Victims of Crime Act (R.S.O. 1990, C.24) which awards compensation to victims of crimes of violence, occurring in Ontario, which result in personal injury or death. The crime of violence must be an offence under the Criminal Code (Canada). Any offence involving a motor vehicle is excluded unless the vehicle was used as a weapon of assault. Compensation is not awarded for property damage or theft or legal fees incurred for criminal and/or civil proceedings. An application form will be provided to an individual if his/her claim appears to fall within the terms of the legislation. Compensation may be awarded for:

Expenses incurred or to be incurred as a result of the victim's injury or death. This would include the cost of counselling, physiotherapy, eyeglasses, prescriptions, dentures etc.

Emergency expenses incurred as a result of the victim's injury or death. These expenses include suchitems as medical costs, funeral expenses and interim counselling.

Loss of wages up to $50 per day or a maximum of $250 per week in cases where total or partial disability affects the victim's ability to work.

Financial loss to dependants of a deceased victim.

Pain and suffering for injuries.

Maintenance of a child born as a result of sexual assault.

Expenses to attend the hearing.
