Genetic Assessment and Counselling

The centre provides comprehensive services in medical genetics to the population of Southwestern Ontario as well as consultative assistance to physicians with patients and families with genetic concerns. The purpose of genetic assessment is to evaluate individual(s) or families who are, or think they are, at risk of having a genetic condition that could be passed on to their children. A family history is taken and the information is analyzed. If necessary, clinical examination and tests are recommended to establish the diagnosis and the risk to family members and future children. Genetic counselling will provide an understanding of the alternatives for dealing with the risk of recurrence and the options available to the individual or couple.
